Wheatfield ZBA tables battery storage variance, seeks fire safety review

NY WHEATFIELD — Wheatfield's Zoning Board of Appeals unanimously tabled a revised variance request from Syncarpha CF II, LLC for a five-megawatt battery storage system on Liberty Drive, pending Building Department paperwork and fire safety coordination. The applicant, which relocated the proposal with setbacks of 454 to 1,145 feet (exceeding the 500-foot minimum), still seeks approval for a system five times the one-megawatt limit. Retired FDNY officer Paul Rogers testified the Tesla Megapack system meets NFPA 855 standards with 20-30 year lifespans and can contain fires.
Fire Advisory Board Chairman Marc Kasprzak raised concerns about thermal runaway risks and smoke affecting residential areas and senior buildings on Williams Road, prompting the tabling.
