NY WHEATFIELD — Wheatfield Zoning Board of Appeals unanimously denies battery storage variance. Syncarpha CF II, LLC requested a five-megawatt Battery Energy Storage System on Liberty Drive, seeking relief from the town's one-megawatt limit and five-hundred-foot setback requirement. Board Chairman Michael Schaffer, Walter Garrow, Matt Klettke, and Matthew Kroening voted four to zero to deny, citing the proposal as a substantial, self-created hardship with concerns over neighborhood impact, fire safety given volunteer emergency response, and forty documented Battery Energy Storage System fires in the United States since 2012.
The applicant withdrew its separate setback variance request during the August 10 hearing.
